A gentle snow began falling early yesterday evening and it hasn’t stopped. How appropriate for the season of darkness that the ground is carpeted in light. I love to leave first fresh footprints in snow, hence a walk into the village today. There were only locals about, on foot too, enjoying the still and quiet that the four inch blanket of snow lends. The white light that comes up from the ground instead of down from above makes the deep grey still snowing sky less ominous. Snow will continue falling until tomorrow morning and isn’t expected to warm and melt before the New Year.
A phone conversation between Canadians, will usually start with how’s the weather where you are, even if they’re only a few miles apart. A day like today is the reason that this conversation goes on year round. The answer to the question how’s the weather can give more information about another than hours of conversation can convey. If you’re also from a Northern climate, when I tell you it’s snowing you know a lot about my circumstances. You know that if I don’t have to drive, I don’t! You know that there can be a lot of work involved. You know that any other plans that were made for this day could change, maybe fast.
One of the ways I say my prayers, to send love and offer gratitude for this life at this wonderful time in our herstory, is to feel back to how the First People’s and our ancestors lived on this landscape in this weather hundreds of years ago. Talk about a reality check, hot and cold running water often top the gratitude list, with feather quilts and wood burning furnaces. And the food preserves…aahhhhh…blessings indeed. None of those blessings would be rich and juicy without the people and cats that fill out the landscape of my everyday life. Thank you, thank you!
Tonight as I listen in to the approach of the darkest night of the year I hear clearly that we need to slow down and take stock now, not when it is convenient. As nature is rejuvenating Herself the message She sends is clear; ease off on whatever you are using to stress yourself. Turn to the Light within when the Darkness without reigns.
