Beauty Sleek Black Bruin

We got an eyeful of her this morning!

She returned in the full light of day, just after our breakfast. What a shiny black bruin, young and small, maybe female. Neither Court nor I got our shot. Court had passionately wished to see her, no wonder then that we did.

My camera was in it’s case…rare that…so while the bear stood to inspect the bell Court had hung on the wire cage that surrounds the bird feeding station, I fumbled getting the camera out. As I stood to shoot, Court shouted at her to stop her from touching the wire…she’s almost destroyed it once…he’ll be hard pressed to mend it if she squishes it again.

When I say neither of us got our shot...besides the bell on the bird cage, Court had wired the composter to give the bear a shock...which was why he wanted so passionately to see what happened. The bear was in the yard for long enough to tear boards off the old compost bins, we didn't hear that, before she wandered over to inspect the potential for bird seed for breakfast. The boobie traps were meant to wake us if she returned in the night.

On a lighter note...with the tiniest darting tongues, our tribe of hummingbirds, are sucking back a litre of nectar (fancy word for sugar water) a day.

Gosh! Anne, Bears in the garden!!
i've never heard/seen anything like it for over here they are long extinct except for those big panther like cats that are sighted now and again.

Some were released into the wild when the dangerous animals act was enforced in the sixties. i have NO desire to see one soon though so help me God.

Those beautiful hummingbirds that grace your garden must be some sight to behold; reminds me of my/our childhood in India when these birds hovered around and about all those hibiscus and other flowers like bourgainvilla in my gran's garden.

Love&laughs,-John

Since reading yours and Courts' tale on your visitor, I went on to read some material, regarding bears.

From what I am gathering, the black bear is comparable to the cartoon character of Yogi Bear. "Smarter then the average bear!"

Coming out of hibernation, asides from the common attractions (human foods) bears, especially black bears, find something attractive in compost and bird feeds, which your statement, validates!

It appears since she, your bear, has "hit the jackpot," as I call it, the only few things I am finding out, to "end this situation" peacefully, for all concerned, the various web sites, regarding situations such as yours' are suggesting, creating bear proof containers.

I wonder if that is possible, depending on the size of the compost. Or creating an electrical fence. Of course; just enough to "fence train" the bear and not to create harm. Even though; I personally do not like the thought of creating pain, I suppose just enough to discourage.

Something that I personally recall, I use to do when I had dogs, that enjoyed chewing was this:

Knowing that dogs, and assuming bears have a heightened sense of smell/taste, I use to make a mixture, consisting of tobasco or a type of hot sauce, adding lots of pepper and mixing it with a bit of water.

Then I would rub the solution on the object (end table legs) for example; and I found that my former dog, found the aroma to over powering. Even when the solution dried, and the smell abated to chew onto the object with the dried solution would still remain until I washed it off.

I am figuring, with the their sense of smell, one could create something which is completely safe yet; unpleasant to smell. It maybe unpleasant to all involved however; if one could endure it long enough maybe she would become discourage and move on to other pastures!

It appears to me, unless she comes across something more attractive, during her ventures, you may get that picture of her after all.

If you guys are experiencing a bit of frustration, I can relate with empathy.

Like last year; when I had the squirrel experience. When they would dig in my flower pots thus; destroying my flowers. It took adding stones and using the garlic solution to discourage them. So far with success this year:)

I pray you all achieve an agreeable outcome!!

Love,
Tim
