We decided to place him gently back in a tree, the second photo. As I moved around the tree to take the picture his head swiveled to follow the motion, but it didn’t startle him as it should. Ten minutes later when I again approached the tree he flew off to land in the grand daddy fir tree above the chicken coop. It seems that the large sunflower eating beak of the black bird offers him some protection from those types of accidents. Smaller beaked birds like the juncos and towhees have died from flying into the window with less force than this fellow.

Despite the discombombulating feeling of hearing a bird hit the window,it is wonderful when our efforts at helping bear fruit. The chance to help and hold a wild bird and, in this case, capture a beautiful picture is a garden blessing indeed.
PS...I finished digging the potato patch.

Dear Anne,
the blackbird visitor's left eye looks a lot clearer in the second picture which is good news. Locally we have plain blackbirds without the red linings, magpies, starlings, the latter which flock in late summer in the millions creating swirling black clouds and some awestruck onlookers! Songbirds are fewer in number due to pet cats taking them, but lately walking by woods, I have heard some clear beautiful crisp singing birds which is a real treat.
The Parks authority have made a path in the water park called The Mabinogion trail (popular Welsh Folklore)through some trees planted a decade ago. Everything here is on a much smaller scale when compared to Canada of course, quaint one might say.
Glad to hear your spud patch is dug; there's something very healing to the psyche when we (you) get our hands well-mucked in earthy terra-firma, to see our (your)efforts come to fruition in the weeks and months ahead.

Hi John, I do love mucking around in the ground...gardening used to be my escape when I had small children. The garden was always quiet, never asked questions, and gave back so much for so little effort. The boys avoided the garden in case I called them in to help me weeding or something other yucky chore. Little did they know I was using the garden to keep them at bay...
Blessings of peace to you,
Anne
